The Tanzanian Ministry of Health has backed FHR’s plans to develop the centre, which will welcome EHPs from around the world, in Tanzania. An architect from the ministry is assisting in the design and site selection, in close co-operation with FHR board members and its secretary Stewart Petrie.
Mr Petrie says: ‘Once this phase has been completed we will move to a formal agreement between FHR, the ministry, CHAMATA (the Tanzanian environmental health officers’ association) and officials at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences on aspects of management and use of the proposed centre.’
He adds: ‘Having the support of the ministry and our friends at MUHAS and CHAMATA is invaluable. This is an exciting moment for us all, knowing that the ball has started to roll.’
It is envisioned that the centre will provide accredited training for environmental and public health professionals from all over the world, and offer a venue for workshops and conferences. It will specialise in training professionals working on development projects and in disasters and emergencies.
